J.K. Rowling
Joanne Rowling is a British novelist best known as the author of the Harry Potter fantasy series. Rowling born in Yate, England, on July 31, 1965 adopted her pen name J.K due to the fact that her publisher wanted her to appeal to younger boys. She incorporated her grandmother's name Kathleen, for the latter initial because she does not have a middle name.
Rowling attended Exter University and graduated with a BA in French and the Classics in 1986. She then worked in London as a researcher for Amnesty International, an organization that campaigns against human rights abuse, amongst other jobs. In 1990 Rowling was on her way back to London from Manchester, however her train had been delayed and Rowling occupied herself by starting the Harry Potter series. Over the next 5 years, Rowling outlined the plots for each book and began writing the first novel. Thus the story of Harry Potter was born.
In December 1990 Rowling's mother Anne Rowling lost her battle with the debilitating condition, sclerosis. Rowling used her mother's death as a great influence to write about Harry Potter being a young wizard who lost his parents at a young age. Still grieving over her mother's death, Rowling moved to Portugal in 1991. She worked as an English teacher in a language institute. Rowling's life in Portugal was described as being 'rock bottom'. Her marriage with a Portuguese man had ended and she left Portugal with her eldest daughter, Jessica.
After Rowling's manuscript Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was accepted, her agent Barry Cunningham advised her to get a day job because there was a very little chance of her making money on children books. Rowling applied at the Scottish Arts Council, with a generous grant of £8,000. Not only was she able to care for her daughter, but she was also able to focus on the next book in the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Soon after the Harry Potter series was finished the series became movies. The films based on the books have become the highest grossing film series in history.
Rowling currently resides in Edinburgh with her husband Dr. Neil Murry, and her three children Jessica, David, and Mackenzie. Rowling is also currently working on a mystery series under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. In 2010 she was named the "Most Influential Woman in Britain" by leading magazine editors. She is a philanthropist supporting many different charities, including several of her own charities. We hope to see more books published by Rowling very soon.
